Contest 1: Design
Goal: The contest is to design a two or three dimensional representation (artwork, drawings, or models) of the perfect library for the Eastern Shore of Virginia. The design can be fantasy, realistic, or a bit of both.
Contest Rules & Guidelines
- Pre-registration required. Call (757) 787-3400, stop by the library, or email youthservices@espl.lib.va.us. Please provide your name, grade, school, address and phone number.
- Contestants must be residents of Accomack or Northampton Counties.
- There is no fee to enter the contest and youth can enter both contests.
- Use your own plastic bricks, cardboard, MineCraft, pen & paper, crayons, or other materials.
- Entries must be your own creation, not a kit, project found online, or in a magazine, etc.
- A written description of the project must accompany the design that describes the features that make it the best library. This can be handwritten or typed; on paper, sign or labels on the design.
- Bring your completed project to the library for the competition. Unfinished projects will not be accepted.
- One entry per participant. Multiple or team submissions are encouraged.
- Prizes will be awarded in three categories: Grades 1-3, Grades 4-6, and Grades 7-12.
- Projects will be judged on the following criteria: Creativity & Originality, Execution, Complexity, Design Decisions, and Awesomeness.
- Your creation must fit within a space of 24 by 24 inches.
- Your completed project must be no taller than three feet tall.
- Entries exceeding maximum dimensions will not be considered for prizes.
- Entries must be taken home after the ceremony ends.
- Your creation will be on display and open to public viewing. The library is not responsible for damage or loss.
- A panel of judges will determine the winners. The judges’ decisions are final.
- Family members of ESPL staff, including Board Members, are ineligible to win.
- Check-in for the contest is from 10:00 a.m. to noon on April 22, 2017 at a location to be announced. Judging will start promptly at noon.

Contest 2: Story
Goal: Write a story about the best library on the Eastern Shore. What would it look like? Who would visit it? What would be in it? What could you do there?
Contest Rules & Guidelines

- There is no fee to enter the contest and youth can enter both contests.
- Contestants can enter up to two stories in this contest. Stories can be co-authored.
- Contestants must be residents of Accomack or Northampton Counties.
- Entries must be previously unpublished.
- Your submission must be a fiction or non-fiction short story, NOT an essay. Short stories have plot, characters, setting, and dialogue.
- Electronic submissions in Microsoft Word and hard copies will be accepted.
- Submissions must be double-spaced and typed in 12-point font or handwritten on standard lined 8-1/2 x 11” paper.
- Please give your story a title.
- Number the pages.
- Illustrations can be included.
- Include a cover page with story title, contestant’s name, phone number, mailing address, grade, and school. Do NOT put your name on the story pages, so that it can be judged anonymously.
- Submissions will be judged on creativity and readability.
- Prizes will be awarded in three categories: Grades 1-3, Grades 4-6, and Grades 7-12.
- A panel of judges will determine the winners. The judges’ decisions are final.
- Stories will become the property of the Eastern Shore Public Library which reserves the right to publish the articles on its website or in print and may be included in a book for fundraising purposes.
- Family members of ESPL staff, including Board Members, are ineligible to win.
