The Eastern Shore of Virginia stretches from the Chesapeake Bay at the southern tip to Maryland’s border at the northern edge. It is composed of two counties: Northampton County, from the Chesapeake Bay-Bridge Tunnel to just north of the town of Exmore, and Accomack County from there to the Maryland border. In 2010 the population of Accomack County was 33, 164 and Northampton was 12, 389. Virginia’s Eastern Shore is home to the longest expanse of coastal wilderness remaining on the eastern seaboard. The Nature Conservancy protects 14 undeveloped barrier islands. Most islands are open to the public for low-impact, non-commercial, recreational day use. The Virginia Department of Conservation and Restoration, established in 1980, continues to protect significant natural areas through land management planning, funding, education and regulation. Outdoor activities are unlimited on the shore: exploring the Barrier Islands, biking or jogging on flat terrain, hunting, fishing in salt or freshwater, water sports, and bird watching, to name a few. The Eastern Shore of Virginia is one of the most significant bird migration areas in the country! The natural beauty of the land and water is inspiration for the many artists who live here and a joy to all who make this bucolic area their home.
