Contest 1: Design

Goal:  The contest is to design a two or three dimensional representation (artwork, drawings, or models) of the perfect library for the Eastern Shore of Virginia.  The design can be fantasy, realistic, or a bit of both.

Contest Rules & Guidelines

  1. Pre-registration required. Call (757) 787-3400, stop by the library, or email youthservices@espl.lib.va.us.  Please provide your name, grade, school, address and phone number.
  2. Contestants must be residents of Accomack or Northampton Counties.
  3. There is no fee to enter the contest and youth can enter both contests.
  4. Use your own plastic bricks, cardboard, MineCraft, pen & paper, crayons, or other materials.
  5. Entries must be your own creation, not a kit, project found online, or in a magazine, etc.
  6. A written description of the project must accompany the design that describes the features that make it the best library.  This can be handwritten or typed; on paper, sign or labels on the design.
  7. Bring your completed project to the library for the competition. Unfinished projects will not be accepted.
  8. One entry per participant.  Multiple or team submissions are encouraged.
  9. Prizes will be awarded in three categories: Grades 1-3, Grades 4-6, and Grades 7-12.
  10. Projects will be judged on the following criteria: Creativity & Originality, Execution, Complexity, Design Decisions, and Awesomeness.
  11. Your creation must fit within a space of 24 by 24 inches.
  12. Your completed project must be no taller than three feet tall.
  13. Entries exceeding maximum dimensions will not be considered for prizes.
  14. Entries must be taken home after the ceremony ends.
  15. Your creation will be on display and open to public viewing. The library is not responsible for damage or loss.
  16. A panel of judges will determine the winners. The judges’ decisions are final.
  17. Family members of ESPL staff, including Board Members, are ineligible to win.
  18. Check-in for the contest is from 10:00 a.m. to noon on April 22, 2017 at a location to be announced. Judging will start promptly at noon.

Contest 2:  Story

 

Goal:  Write a story about the best library on the Eastern Shore.  What would it look like?  Who would visit it?  What would be in it?  What could you do there?

Contest Rules & Guidelines

  1. Pre-registration required. Call (757) 787-3400, stop by the library, or email youthservices@espl.lib.va.us.  Please provide your name, grade, school, address and phone number.
  2. There is no fee to enter the contest and youth can enter both contests.
  3. Contestants can enter up to two stories in this contest.  Stories can be co-authored.
  4. Contestants must be residents of Accomack or Northampton Counties.
  5. Entries must be previously unpublished.
  6. Your submission must be a fiction or non-fiction short story, NOT an essay. Short stories have plot, characters, setting, and dialogue.
  7. Electronic submissions in Microsoft Word and hard copies will be accepted.
  8. Submissions must be double-spaced and typed in 12-point font or handwritten on standard lined 8-1/2 x 11” paper.
  9. Please give your story a title.
  10. Number the pages.
  11. Illustrations can be included.
  12. Include a cover page with story title, contestant’s name, phone number, mailing address, grade, and school.  Do NOT put your name on the story pages, so that it can be judged anonymously.
  13. Submissions will be judged on creativity and readability.
  14. Prizes will be awarded in three categories: Grades 1-3, Grades 4-6, and Grades 7-12.
  15. A panel of judges will determine the winners. The judges’ decisions are final.
  16. Stories will become the property of the Eastern Shore Public Library which reserves the right to publish the articles on its website or in print and may be included in a book for fundraising purposes.
  17. Family members of ESPL staff, including Board Members, are ineligible to win.
